Stripes Performance is striving to raise awareness about mental health and erase the stigma toward sports officials. building the community

After the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the world, the game of hockey saw its return in 2021. However, officiating staff around the province was severely impacted and a plan was needed to bring back the community. Richmond Jets Officiating Coordinator Brandy Brundige stepped up and transformed a few dozen officials into a community of 200+ members.

Throughout the years, Stripes Performance has attracted officials all over BC to participate in its events. Officials from the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, and Thompson-Okanagan regions have also joined its mentorship team to deliver coaching opportunities. With such a large reach, Richmond Jets alumni Christian Yip helped create infrastructure for the vast community to engage and learn while off the ice through its website and Discord server.

developing the next generation

Despite the successful return to hockey, many officials lacked the skills and training due to the pandemic. So in the summer of 2022, Stripes Performance was founded by Brandy Brundige and Christian Yip to help provide resources and education. In an effort to deliver coaching and mentorship opportunities, the Richmond Jets sent a record of nine officials to summer officiating camps. Six officials attended BC Hockey summer officiating camps and three officials attended the BCHL officiating development camp.

Since then, Stripes Performance has expanded to over 200 members and its commitment to developing officials has led them to deliver new experiences and events. Its growing network of officiating coaches and mentors has also allowed them to provide more development opportunities, making them a leader in officiating growth at the grassroots level. As a result, Stripes Performance has created its own evaluation system and officiating awards for the 2023-24 season, recognizing the hard work and dedication of its community members.

creating unique opportunities

Just like professional athletes, Stripes Performance wanted to provide its officials with apparel, gear, and benefits to make them feel part of the team. So in 2023, Stripes Performance made its first partnership with BioSteel Sports. Throughout the season, BioSteel has powered Stripes Performance events with hydration, towels, and other amenities that NHL players are provided with.

Moreover, its connection with the hockey community has given its officials the opportunity to officiate WHL and BCHL special events and prospect camps. Entering the 2023-24 season, Stripes Performance will be the first in BC to implement the Green Armband Initiative. This movement aims to address abuse toward young officials and raise awareness about mental health. They will also be leading a new Mic’d Up series to better showcase effective communication between officials, players, and coaches.

luca huynh

Officiating Coach | PJHL Linesman
Vancouver, BC

I started officiating during my playing career because I thought I could make some pocket cash and have some spending money during school. My passion for officiating grew through the help of my RIC at the time, and I eventually started to take it more seriously as the games got better. My long-term goal for officiating is to be hired by and work for the Western Hockey League as well as be IIHF licensed.

Giving back to the community is essential to me because as I was coming up, I was fortunate enough to have the resources from various supervisors and mentors that helped me get to where I am today. Therefore, it is only right for me to put in an immense amount of time and effort back into the minor league programs and help young officials find their passion and guide them to their chosen paths.

A fun fact about me is that I play all types of sports, such as basketball, ultimate, football, track, etc. I just love to get active and have some fun. I am currently a full-time student majoring in HR and work part-time.

Tanner got into officiating to view the game through a different perspective and to make a bit of pocket change. He has his eyes set on officiating at a National High performance event this year and making a deep push into KIJHL playoffs. He believes giving back to the officiating community is important and always appreciates providing mentorship and advice to younger officials. "Watch as a spectator, react as a referee", is one of Tanner's favourite pieces of advice.

Igot into officiating when I was 13, it started as a way to make some extra money and be around the game more during the season. 10 years later the money’s even better than it used to be, but love of the game is what keeps me coming back.

Coming up through minor hockey, I had some really great mentors and people who supported me. So I got into the mentoring program to try and give back, and be a similar support for today's younger officials. It can be very lonely out there as a young official and a lot of them quit every year, my goal is to offer my support and hopefully help them overcome some of that adversity.

Believe it or not the game needs officials and they can be very hard to come by, out of everyone I grew up working with in Richmond, only a handful of us are still officiating.

Mentorship Leader
Richmond, BC

At the age of 13, I delved into officiating with the Richmond Minor Hockey Association, fueled by my love for the game. As an official, I found myself immersed in a unique perspective that kept me closely connected to the sport I adored. Over six fulfilling years, I made lasting friendships, learned valuable life lessons, and discovered the rewards of hard work and dedication.

The camaraderie with fellow officials and players on the ice fostered a strong sense of unity, transcending the boundaries of the hockey rink. Officiating taught me that success, both on and off the ice, hinged on my willingness to push myself and embrace challenges with resilience.

Guided by supportive mentors and supervisors, I honed my skills and grew as an individual. Now, I take pride in giving back to the sport that shaped me by supporting and guiding younger officials as they begin their own officiating journeys.

My officiating career began with a simple passion for hockey, and it has been a journey filled with experiences and relationships that have enriched my life.

kyle wong

Mentorship Leader
Richmond, BC

Born in 1999, Kyle Wong is classified as one of the tenured officials on the Stripes Performance team. Having officiated over 13 years and counting, Kyle has had the privilege to partake in a plethora of invaluable experiences throughout his career — from participating in the yearly Richmond tournaments to working the CSSHL — where he was fortunate enough to officiate local BC boys Connor Bedard, Zach Benson, and many more.

To Kyle, officiating is about learning life skills that will stay with you forever. When the going gets tough, nothing motivates him more than powering through and getting the job done. He hopes to pass on a tenacious mentality not just to our newest additions, but to all the officials he has the honor of working with.

Stripes Performance is a leader in officiating development at the grassroots level and strives to improve and expand its platform to more officials. Last year, they managed a community of over 200 officials in Richmond and the surrounding area. This season, Stripes Performance wanted to make officiating development and progression a more engaging and rewarding experience. For this reason, Co-founder Christian Yip has developed a new achievement system that awards participants with badges. Learn more about the program below.

get evaluated

Before you start collecting badges, you need to get an evaluation from a Stripes Performance Officiating Coach. Our coaches Luca Huynh (Vancouver), Tanner Pereschitz (Kelowna), and Holden Schneider (Victoria) currently work in junior A hockey leagues across the province and have numerous years of experience in BC Hockey's high-performance program. Their passion for helping the community and the next generation of officials has led them to join our team. This season, they will be delivering development opportunities in Richmond and their respective regions. Additionally, our community mentors will be delivering mentorship opportunities using our new evaluation system. Our mentorship team will be present during tournaments and events in Richmond.

earn badges

Once you've received an evaluation from one of our coaches, you will be able to open your report. Here, you will be able to view your coach's feedback and the badges you've earned during your performance. There are 6 core categories (skating, positioning, procedures, communication, teamwork, and judgement), each containing 3 ranks (developing, meeting, and exceeding expectations). With every evaluation, you will be able to track your progress and improvements in each category.

custom designed

As this system was created based on the Hockey Canada supervision platform, we wanted to compose visual elements to enhance the user experience to a new level. It's badges and user interface were created and animated based on a variety of video game design elements (Valorant, NBA 2K23, League of Legends, FIFA 23) to connect with it's youth audience. View all the badge categories below.

Skating

The use of skating techniques (such as tight-turns and cross-overs) is important to effectively move around the ice. Great skating ability is imperative to achieve exceptional positioning.

positioning

Effective movement is needed to position yourself to support your crew, create the best sightlines, and make the correct calls.

Procedures

The standard system to conduct face-offs, line changes, penalties, and other operations during the play or after the whistle.

communication

Cooperation with players, coaches, and fellow officials to keep the game safe.

teamwork

Communicating with and supporting your team by working the blue line, covering positions, and creating the best sightlines.

judgement

Whether its setting the penalty standard for the game or making a call on the line, good judgement is needed to keep the game safe and fair for all participants.
